Primer PAR1

Any resin coating holds only as well as its adhesion to the substrate. Primer PAR1 addresses this: the high-strength methyl methacrylate primer from GCP Applied Technologies creates a cohesive bond with the substrate that is typically stronger than the tensile strength of the concrete itself — and this can be verified on-site before work begins

Weak adhesion between concrete and coating

Protective polymer mastics, acrylic or asphalt concrete coatings can delaminate from the mineral substrate under dynamic loads from transport. Primer PAR1 creates a bond stronger than the cohesive strength of concrete, providing a reliable base for GCP resin systems. Additionally, under dynamic loads, as well as due to water and chemical penetration under the asphalt concrete coating due to insufficient adhesion, cracks often form in concrete pavements. The material is introduced directly into the crack, where it settles and penetrates inside, sealing and healing the defect. If significant width cracks open after surface preparation, PAR1 can be used as a repair filler — mixed with sand in a 1:1 ratio. This significantly reduces repair time and allows the use of a single group material with the main waterproofing protection, without switching to external repair compounds. Also, Primer PAR1 has the property of strengthening and consolidating the substrate before further application, which is especially important for weak and dusty surfaces.

Material features

Primer PAR1 is a two-component fast-curing methyl methacrylate resin. It is supplied in pre-weighed kits of 20 kg, ready for mixing on-site, and can be applied with a brush, roller, or spraying. Low viscosity (50–80 cps) ensures good penetration into cracks and voids without excessive material waste.

Important application conditions: the substrate must be dry and free from oil, grease, dirt, and bitumen; weak concrete and cement milk are removed mechanically or by acid etching. Cracks are cleaned of debris and moisture using a vacuum or compressed air.

If the key goal is to ensure that the subsequent coating adheres reliably, Primer PAR1 will provide just that: adhesion to the substrate that is typically stronger than the concrete itself, with fast curing and the ability to verify quality with a test right on-site.

Product advantages

Advantage 1

Fast curing — 20 minutes to foot traffic, 40 minutes to apply the next layer

Advantage 2

Can be applied over a wide temperature range, including below zero; the range can be extended by adding a retarder or cold additive

Advantage 3

Excellent elasticity (elongation 25–30%) allows for certain structural movements

Advantage 4

Seamless, without cold joints — always bonds to itself, no restrictions on windows for re-coating

Advantage 5

Typical consumption — 250–300 g/m² in one layer (depends on the porosity of the concrete; very porous substrates may require reapplication)
